When she gets that gift card she’s going to sell it to Charles for a little fold of aluminum foil with some paper in it and then she’s going to Ricky’s place under the viaduct because he has the cleanest needles. Every time she gets the jab her neck gets a little stiffer but she racks it up to sleeping on concrete. She’s wearing a big knit hat she found in a dumpster and she’s going to say she’s Grace Smith for the record. Grace Smith was a friend of hers in second grade. Has she ever been jabbed before? No, of course not. They can see the jab marks on her arm, one of them with a pearl of pus coming out of it, but they get paid by the jab so they don’t ask any questions. A pretty young thing with a mask and rubber gloves on jabs her and then gives her an index card with the name Grace Smith on it which she shoves in her back pocket with the other one that says Betty Jones on it, and she anxiously accepts the little money envelope. She can’t help showing her missing front teeth as she scuttles away smiling.
